"Our history is not a record of events, but a living legacy built by those who dared to make a difference."

Early Years

Established in 1940, the Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society (STMWS) has a rich history of serving the community. From its humble beginnings with a small committee and members, STMWS progressed steadily, expanding its services to include Meelath functions, Prophet Maulid recitations, family day and sports events. Driven by dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and leaders, STMWS strove to make a positive impact.

The Journey

Our journey began more than a hundred years ago, rooted in the town of Tenkasi, in the district of Nellai (Tirunelveli). Our ancestors were primarily farmers and handloom weavers, living in harmony with the beautiful landscape—the marshes, the hills of the kurinji terrain, and the majestic mountains touching the sky, where white clouds would slowly descend. The vast Bhagandraiyanna paddy fields, smiling under the open sky, created a land so enchanting that leaving it would break anyone’s heart. In 1940, the Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Support Society was officially established with 57 members.

Bold Move

Tenkasians and the Kadayanallur community with their families arrived in Singapore. They took on humble jobs - as labourers, hawkers, clerks, and spice grinders. They adapted to the multi-ethnic society by first strengthening bonds within their own communities, then building lasting ties with others.Settling mainly in southern areas like Tanjong Pagar and Kampong Bahru, they worked hard and grew alongside the nation. In 1926, the two communities came together to form the Muslim Improvement Club (MIC) to support their social and communal needs.

Name Evolution

In 1940, during Pre - World War II, the Tenkasi Muslim Benefit Society was formed to support over 50 families. The Society soon expanded its reach, fostering collaboration across races and religions. By the 1960s and 70s, members served on national committees and worked with other communities and government bodies. The society was renamed the Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society in 1960. In 1974, it became Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society (STMWS). Education was strongly emphasised then. The member's children attended Siruvar Tamil Padasaalai school that was established and learnt Tamil, Mathematics, and English.

Resilience and Strength

In the early 1950s, new regulations prohibited educational classes from being held in non-dedicated buildings. Despite the problem, the society continued to support educational and fundraising efforts, and assisted our sister association, the Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League in her efforts to build a school. The society worked tirelessly for the community's safety and security during the post-war time. The society also received permission from the British colonial government to organize a community security patrol, further solidifying its important social role.

Cultural Growth

The society nurtured rich musical traditions. It is no exaggeration to say that the Shahjahan Innisai Kache’ri gained renown across Singapore and Malaysia. From early performances like the Gymkhana Music Kacheri, they showcased genres such as Qawwali, Ghazal, Mellisai, and Carnatic music. The founder, extraordinarily talented Haji Mr P.M. Mohamed Shah was a brilliant accordionist, and his 10-member band captured the essence of Indian music with their mesmerizing performances . They performed regularly in the Tamil TV and Radio programmes. They had also represented the Indian community, culture and performed at the Singapore City Day in 1953.

Preserving the Legacy

This year marks the 85th anniversary of our Society. We take immense pride in honouring the dreams of our forefathers - their vision that Singapore would be our home. Though their journey was far from easy, we now enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice and dedication. We remain grateful for the foundation they built. With that spirit, we pledge to uphold their legacy and continue serving our community with unity, integrity, and compassion.
